Buena Vista is a Colorado community of about 2,500 people situated in the northern portion of Chaffee County and located in a wonderful mountain valley setting. Geographically, we are approximately 90 miles west of Colorado Springs. There are another 5,000 people in the surrounding area of the town of Buena Vista. Nestled in the Colorado Rockies at the foot of Mt. Princeton, one of the 14,000+ Colorado peaks, Buena Vista is famous for its western hospitality and its great outdoor recreational activities. The small town atmosphere and mountain vistas provide a safe and scenic setting in which to educate students. Buena Vista School District R-31 is a 1000-student school district consisting of three different campuses: Avery-Parsons Elementary School includes grades Pre-Kindergarten through grade 5; McGinnis Middle School (includes grades 6, 7, 8) and the Buena Vista High School (includes grades 9 through 12; and 3) Chaffee County High School, an alternative school for grades 9 through 12. CCHS is housed on East Main Street near downtown Buena Vista.

Mission

The mission of the Buena Vista School District (BVSD) is "to ensure every student reaches the peak of success." Not only does this mission guide the actions of our Strategic Plan, it characterizes our community. BVSD has a rich tradition and reputation for promoting and celebrating the whole child: students of strong and competitive academic excellence, who are involved and excelling in athletics, creative and practical arts, and service, and who exhibit strong character qualities such as respect, responsibility, cooperation, and resiliency. (See our ten Indicators of Student Success that further explain our commitment to the whole child). We take our mission very seriously. In BVSD, every student matters.

Beliefs

A core set of beliefs are the foundation of our school district. Because we believe every child deserves teachers who are passionate, competent, and positive role models of character and life-long learning, BVSD is committed to recruiting, and supporting powerful teachers. The relationship between the student and the teacher is the key factor in a student reaching his or her full potential; our teachers build these relationships in their daily work with students. BVSD teachers are unsurpassed in their profession.
We are fortunate to have a very supportive community in Buena Vista. We have active participation on school committees and many volunteers come in to the schools from the surrounding community. Buena Vista School District R-31 is blessed to have an enthusiastic Booster Club, numerous non-profit foundations, and business community supporters.

Vision

The Buena Vista School District is striving to be a "District of Distinction" as designated by the Colorado Department of Education by summer 2012. It is our vision to serve the community of Buena Vista by providing learning opportunities that are both rigorous and responsive to the needs of individuals.

The School Board

The Governing Board of the Buena Vista School District has a long-standing reputation of being student-oriented. The Board has established and promotes four academic Ends policies, supported through a Strategic Plan, in the Policy Governance model they use to govern the school district. The work of the Board is to build capacity through policy and encourage all staff members to improve student achievement by focusing their efforts on making reasonable progress towards the Strategic Plan. By doing so, the school...
