Gifted and talented services support Buena Vista School District's commitment to ensuring every student reaches the peak of success. Students identified gifted possess unique abilities and/or potential and are, therefore, a unique segment of the district's student population. Gifted students' abilities differ from their peers to such a degree that differentiated curricula and instructional techniques are needed to nurture growth and development. It is the mission of gifted education in the Buena Vista School District to explore and develop the potential of students identified gifted by providing flexible and innovative learning experiences that challenge the identified student to reach his/her potential.
A body of evidence (Assessment Profile) is used to identify students in need of gifted services. The body of evidence is collected either by nomination from a parent, teacher, peer, or student or after a screening process in fifth grade.
Once identified, an Advanced Learning Plan (ALP) will be developed by the gifted coordinator, the teacher, the parent, and the student. The ALP establishes goals to support the growth and development of the student and is reviewed annually (Tier 3 services) or during transition years (Tier 2 services).
