Buena Vista is a Colorado community of about 2,500 people situated in the northern portion of Chaffee County and located in a wonderful mountain valley setting. Geographically, we are approximately 90 miles west of Colorado Springs. There are another 5,000 people in the surrounding area of the town of Buena Vista. Nestled in the Colorado Rockies at the foot of Mt. Princeton, one of the 14,000+ Colorado peaks, Buena Vista is famous for its western hospitality and its great outdoor recreational activities. The small town atmosphere and mountain vistas provide a safe and scenic setting in which to educate students.

Buena Vista School District R-31 is a 1000-student school district consisting of three different campuses: 1) Avery-Parsons Elementary School includes grades Pre-Kindergarten through grade 5; 2) McGinnis Middle School (includes grades 6, 7, 8) and the Buena Vista High School (includes grades 9 through 12; and 3) Chaffee County High School, an alternative school for grades 9 through 12. CCHE is housed on East Main Street near downtown Buena Vista.

We are fortunate to have a very supportive community in Buena Vista. In 1998, the voters passed a $7 million bond issue which provided funds for the new middle school/high school media center and the new Avery-Parsons Elementary School. We have active participation on school committees and many volunteers come in to the schools from the surrounding community. Buena Vista School District R-31 is blessed to have an enthusiastic Booster Club, numerous non-profit foundations, and business community supporters.

The Governing Board of the Buena Vista School District has a long-standing reputation of being student-oriented. The Board has established and promotes four academic Ends policies in the Policy Governance model they use to govern the school district. The work of the Board is to build capacity through policy and encourage all staff members to improve student achievement by focusing their efforts on making reasonable progress towards the Ends Policies. By doing so, the school district will continue to excel.

Students continue to improve test scores, their attendance, and graduation rates. As a school district, we do all we can to attract the best teachers with a competitive salary and benefit package. Buena Vista School District R-31 is committed to hiring people who will challenge our students to do their best work and assist them to do so in a supportive and nurturing manner.

Please take a minute to look through our web site and learn about our programs and schools. If you have any questions or would like additional information, give us a call at 719-395-7000 or contact us through the web site. We are excited to be working in a school district where we know that all of the people (students and staff) are measured by more than just test scores. We believe that the positive relationships that we establish will do more to help our students achieve to their fullest potential in a safe and nurturing environment.

Sincerely,

Tina Goar
